What's up with that?
This morning I read an article on CNN's FitNation. They were giving the top 10 states with overweight people. All of the states rounding out the top 10 were in the South. They also mentioned in the article that, "The South also has a large concentration of rural residents and black women -- two groups that tend to have higher obesity rates." This was a quote as to why the South has such a high obesity rate. However, it made me think that they were calling black women fat. Who does that? Women in general already have self-esteem issue, why add to it? Black women, and I can say this because I'm a black woman, tend to deal with stress a lot. Either from working, family, or other life events. I am not saying that other people don't have stress, but most stay at home moms that I know are not African-American. Most black women work full-time jobs, take care of home and kids, and extended family. Most of the time they put their health and time for themselves on the back burner and there you go. I'm not trying to defend the obesity of people, it's not healthy and lots of the health problems we see among the African-American community is because of obesity. However, I do not feel that it is far to only point out one demographic in an area that has more than just "fat" black women.
